Featured Photograph — Painted Pink
Hutt Lagoon, Port Gregory, Western Australia
From the ground, Hutt Lagoon is already an extraordinary sight, but seeing it from the air reveals an entirely different landscape.
Flying above the lagoon near Port Gregory in Western Australia, I was captivated by the patterns created by the intensely coloured water, pale salt edges and narrow tracks dividing the ponds below.
The remarkable pink colour is created by the salt-loving microalga Dunaliella salina, which produces beta-carotene — the natural pigment responsible for the lagoon's famous pink and red hues.
From above, all of those elements become almost abstract. The landscape stops looking like a lake and becomes a composition of colour, shape, texture and line.
It's one of the things I love most about aerial photography — familiar landscapes can become something completely unexpected when seen from a different perspective.
Behind the Lens
My happy place is out in nature — exploring wild places, discovering new landscapes and waiting for those fleeting moments that make photography so special.
From the vast landscapes of Western Australia to wild places across Australia and beyond, my camera has taken me on some extraordinary adventures.
