The Story Behind the Photograph

One of the things I was most excited about when moving to Western Australia's Pilbara region was the opportunity to photograph its dramatic storms and extraordinary outback landscapes.

There is something captivating about the contrast between the rich red earth, golden grasslands and the dark, moody skies that gather over this vast and remote country.

On 18 January 2025, as a tropical weather system developed offshore that would soon become Tropical Cyclone Sean, dust storms and thunderstorms began sweeping through the Onslow region.

As I watched the storm clouds gathering and the conditions changing, I grabbed my camera and headed out of town towards the termite mound viewing area.

With the wind picking up and other vehicles heading back towards town, I was travelling in the opposite direction, hoping to capture the drama unfolding across the landscape.

The towering red termite mounds stood scattered across the golden plains beneath an enormous blanket of storm clouds. Along the horizon, soft pink and peach tones illuminated the dusty atmosphere, creating a beautiful contrast against the deep grey skies.

It was exactly the kind of wild, atmospheric Pilbara landscape I had dreamed of photographing.

The developing cyclone continued along the coast offshore, bringing dust storms, thunderstorms and welcome rain to the Onslow region.

Before the Storm captures a fleeting moment when the remarkable colours of the Pilbara met the drama of an approaching weather system — a reminder of the raw and ever-changing beauty of Australia's northwest.
