The Story Behind the Photograph
On 1 March 2026, a powerful dust storm swept across the coastal town of Onslow in Western Australia's Pilbara region, transforming the familiar landscape into an extraordinary sea of orange.
I had been preparing to head out photographing birds when I noticed enormous clouds of orange dust approaching town. I quickly changed my camera lens and headed out to capture the unfolding storm.
Within minutes, the wind intensified and thick red dust swept across the landscape, reducing visibility and creating an almost surreal atmosphere.
I captured this photograph as the storm engulfed a local playground, the familiar structures standing against a wall of swirling Pilbara dust.
With wind gusts reaching 83 kilometres per hour, it was an incredible display of nature's power and a moment I won't forget.
Several of my photographs from that afternoon were subsequently featured by ABC News, documenting the remarkable weather event that briefly turned Onslow orange. Photographs from this extraordinary afternoon went on to be shared by news and weather outlets and across social media around the world, bringing a little piece of the Pilbara to an international audience.
Dust Storm captures a dramatic moment in the Pilbara — raw, powerful and unmistakably Australian.
