The Story Behind the Photograph

This encounter happened in early September 2026 while I was exploring new areas of bushland along Twitchen Road, near the Ashburton River in Onslow.

I had recently discovered Painted Finches in the area, so I was excited to come across a small flock while making my way out towards the river. They would have been incredibly easy to miss — I only found them by driving slowly, stopping and listening carefully for their calls.

Following the sound led me to a small group perched amongst the branches. Each time I tried to move closer they would take flight, but fortunately these two remained perched together just long enough for me to capture this photograph.

It was shortly after sunrise and the beautiful golden morning light illuminated the birds and surrounding branches.

It's moments like this that I love about bird photography — finding something unexpected, quietly observing it and being fortunate enough to capture a fleeting moment in the wild.
