Long before moving to Onslow in Western Australia's Pilbara region, I had dreamed of photographing the extraordinary tidal creek formations that spread across this remote coastline.
When I discovered we would be moving to Onslow, I spent hours exploring Google Maps, searching for the landscapes I hoped to capture. Surrounded by tidal creeks and vast stretches of untouched country, I knew that seeing this remarkable landscape from the air would offer an entirely different perspective.
On 16 August 2024, I finally had the opportunity to bring that dream to life.
Flying south of Onslow in a small aircraft with the door removed, I asked the pilot to help me find the intricate, tree-like creek formations I had been longing to photograph.
As we circled above the landscape, the winding turquoise waterways and delicate branching patterns revealed themselves against the warm golden earth below.
This photograph captures one of those extraordinary formations, where nature has created something resembling a beautiful tree, etched into the coastal landscape by the movement of the tides.
It remains one of my favourite aerial photographs and a wonderful reminder of why I fell in love with photographing the Pilbara from above.
